Farewell

Mr Chia is retiring this year and I think many teachers and students will miss him. He has given us the opportunities to develop and grow in HS and has touched the hearts of many.

Farewell party for me and Mrs Adeline Tan by 3E2 - will miss them too! I will be joining Serangoon Secondary School next year where my son is studying now. Edna, Xiang Jing, Maya, Jia Yuan, Kai Qi....

Time really flies and I realised that I have taught in HS for 7 years and I will be receiving the long service award as well as the outstanding contribution award tomorrow.

Hong Kong Exchange Program

As we are taking the budget airline, I have reminded the cadets to bring some money in case they need to buy food or drink on the flight which will take us around 4 hours. The cadets have to meet at Changi Airport Terminal 1 at 4.30 a.m. for Check in (2 hours before departure) as the flight 3K691 is at 640 a.m. and we should reach Hong Kong at 1025 a.m. Lunch for the first day is also not provided and I told the students they should bring some HK$ as well. Around HK50(S10) for one meal. I will update the cadets on the school for the exchange and they would have to work on the presentation.

We will be staying at the Regal Oriental Hotel. Return flight will be 3K 696 at 815 pm and we should reach Singapore midnight. Click on the image below to see the prices of food and drink on board.

HS Olympiad "Every Second Counts" competition

Our team beat 25 teams in the Preliminary round to get into the finals today.

They were placed in the 5th placing securing the consolation prize.

We were happy for them though we think that they could have done better.

Graduation Ceremony

The graduating classes had their graduation ceremony on Monday and I am glad that all (except Jason) made the effort to attend. The class was extremely united and fun loving - they edited a short video presentation as well as came up with a class cheer!

I had also created a short video for the class and was shocked to see that only the title page and credit were shown. I have posted the video clip which I intended to show below - a recollection of the activities for 5A1 and my well wishes for the class:

Red Cross Meeting today

We held a meeting today to update the cadets on the coming events for Red Cross:

1. Speech Day Rehearsals - all cadets to report at 830 a.m. on Mon (13/10) and Sihui will decide on the cadets in the GOH and the supporting contingent. The rest of the cadets will serve as first aiders. As for the other rehearsals, the cadets will be briefed on Monday.

2. Hong Kong Exchange Program - the consent forms and edusave withdrawal forms were given out and the cadets were reminded to submit them on Monday. There should not be any more changes on Monday as their names will be submitted and printed on the air tickets. Agnes and Ellyn would also need to submit the photocopy of their passport particulars as they have not done so. The cadets also agreed on the design for the t-shirt - design no. 2 which I posted earlier. Ms Vani checked with the cadets the T-shirt sizes and reminded them to bring $15 next Monday. I had to replace Jasmine with Ellyn as she had not turned up for the meetings we had and we could not contact her parents. Simin, Siti, Ching Yee were not in the meeting as they had their papers later today and Marcus had a dental appointment. They need to get from Mrs Lai the forms on Monday or it would be too late!

3. Promotion Day on 18 Oct. All the cadets will receive their new ranks and also the badges next Sat.

4. I congratulated the team who got into the HS Olympiad "Every second counts" competition which will be held in Ngee Ann Polytechnic next Friday. The teachers will also be there to support them and Hui Si is reminded to get her team ready.

5. Sihui will be in-charge of the Red Cross First Aid Competition on 15 Nov ( right after our HK trip). I passed her 5 sets of the information sent by HQ and told her to brief her team members- Sihui, HuiSi, Caiying and Reserve Reine.

6. I put Caiying in-charge of getting the people for the mass accreditation for Gold on 1 Nov and Yu Ling for the unit instructor program. Mrs Lai strongly encouraged Caiying to go for the Gold accreditation for Gold in footdrill. However Yu Lin alerted me that the Sec 2 have not passed silver accreditation yet and might not qualify for the unit instructor accreditation.

7. I also told the cadets about the RCY challenge which will be held from 29 Nov to 2 Dec. It would be a good chance for them to earn the lanyard which they can wear with their uniform. So far Jia Yun and Yang Yew are the only ones with the lanyards and they look so smart with it.

8. This year the Project Love will be held on 12 Dec in Pioneer JC. I told the cadets to go back and decide whether they would want to participate in it this year. They have to tell me on Monday if they want to volunteer for this CIP.

9. Mrs Lai talked to the cadets about the Flag day next year. The external collection would be on the 10 Jan which would coincide with the Sec 1 meet-the-parent session. The cadets took a vote and all agreed to participate in the internal collection as well which is from 5 to 9 Jan. The cadets were reminded to prepare for it seriously as it would help us in our recruitment drive next year.

10. Mrs Lai also told the cadets going to Hong Kong that they have to prepare a presentation and share with the Hong Kong RCY our RCY activities in Singapore. I will also get them to prepare some name cards which they can share with the Hong Kong RCY.

After saying all these, I must say I will really miss HS Red Cross... .

I created the following video last year - I hope the cadets can do something similar to show to the RCY in Hong Kong.

Coming events in Oct and Nov

Busy marking the Sec 3 Geog and SS papers now. At the same time troubled by the change of destination from Bangkok to HK due to complications in procurement and financial matters. Hopefully everything will turn up well by next week.

It would be the first rehearsal for Speech Day next Monday. I have already applied for the loan of belts for the GOH as well as the drill sticks and sash but the person-in-charge has yet to reply. The same applied to my application for the new ranks and badges which I submitted 2 weeks ago - the person-in-charge is still checking the stock and had not responded. The Graduation Ceremony is also on next Monday.

Another rehearsal for Speech Day on Wed 15 Oct. I also have to check all the marks for SA and enter them by next Wed as I will be away for official duty next Thurs 16 Oct.

Our Red Cross cadets took part in the HS Olympiad (Health Science olympiad) "Every Second counts" and made it to the finals next Friday 17 oct. I will be going down to Ngee Ann with Mrs Lai to support the team and hopefully they can make it to the top 3. Our team came in 2nd in the competition 2 years ago ("Every Second counts")

Red Cross Promotion cum Speech Day rehearsal on Sat 18 Oct.

I have to finish the testimonials for 5A1 by 20 Oct.

Prize presentation to the team for the HS Olympiad on Mon 20 Oct.

Speech Day Rehearsal on Tues 21 Oct and the actual day is on Thurs 23 Oct which is also the last day of School.

I will be attending the Strategic Planning Workshop with SSS on Sat 25th Oct.

After that I will be away on 2 day course on the 3rd and 4th Nov.

Our Red Cross Exchange Program to HK will be from 10 to 13 Nov.

Our students also won the http://learnat.info/onedegreenorthand I will have to get them ready for the award ceremony which is on 14 Nov at MOE. HS staff retreat is also on the same day and I wonder whether I can be excused from the retreat.

I also agreed to doing a sharing for Microsoft in a road show in Nov - just hope that the date do not coincide with any of the dates above.

I have already booked for a personal tour to HK with my husband from 21 to 24 Nov - I hope I can really enjoy myself then!
